Makeup Tips for Brides, From a Pro!
Hello Beauties!
We all know that weddings are stressful. There are SO many vendors with which to contact and contract, and SO many little details to learn and know. As a pro makeup artist, I want to give you as much guidance as possible. It’s not just about finding the right makeup artist, but what to expect for your trial, how to prep for a more flawless makeup application, and how to improve the longevity of your makeup.
What to look for in a makeup artist (MUA)
1. While a licensed cosmetologist has had good training in prep and sanitation, they often have very limited experience with makeup. I’ve personally trained cosmetology students, so I can tell you that it is extremely limited. A certified pro MUA, although not licensed, has had specific training in makeup application and sanitation.
a. A license is not required to work in every state, but in those that do, a licensed cosmetologist certified in makeup application would be most ideal, as they have expertise in both hair AND makeup.
2. A professional MUA will be someone that treats this artistry as a career, not a hobby. Therefore, they will invest in the proper tools to promote themselves.
a. A complete website in addition to active social media pages.
i. MUAs that have expertise in bridal makeup usually also market themselves on wedding websites.
b. Business cards—although technology dominates communication these days, the effort involved in designing business cards proves that the MUA is serious. Besides, professionals still exchange business cards during networking events.
3. Quick and easy communication.
a. Someone who responds in a timely manner (within 24-48 hours).
b. Someone who does not shy away from answering any questions regarding techniques, sanitation, etc.

How to convey the proper look and vibe to your MUA
1. Find the right hair and makeup inspiration.
a. Find a model that has a similar look as you. Makeup looks different on all skin tones, eyes shapes, etc. To be completely blunt, an Asian woman looking at makeup inspo of white women will NOT translate.
2. Have a phone conversation before scheduling a makeup trial.
a. Save your money! If you don’t vibe with your artist, you won’t fully enjoy your special day.
b. The right MUA will ask you specific questions regarding skin sensitivity/allergy, brand/product preferences, etc. They may also ask questions regarding theme and style.
What to expect from your makeup trial (a trial is a MUST if you want things to run smoothly on your big day!)
1. Payment for services—listen, I know it’s hard to keep on budget, but your potential artist is still spending time, energy, and product making up your face. Unless they offer a free trial, be ready to pay up.
a. Want to save some money on your trial? Ask for a half face, instead, and see if your MUA will agree. It’s a good way to see the before and after, as well!
2. A full coverage look.
a. Your everyday makeup will not cut it for your wedding, and even less so through the camera lens.
b. Although your makeup should feel lightweight on your skin, taking a close-up look in a mirror may be a BIG mistake; this is makeup for photography and film, which could mean more powder, heavier eyeshadow, etc.
c. Be realistic: you can’t hide every blemish or uneven texture with makeup. While large pores may be minimized by some primers, the major work is done with skincare and hydration. Do yourself a favor and develop a solid skincare routine, and drink plenty of water!
How to prep before the big day
1. No bachelorette parties allowed—not so close to the big day, anyway! Binge-drinking will not only give you a hangover, but it will wreak havoc on your skin (as mentioned just above).
2. Give yourself a mini facial. Not only will you feel more relaxed for your special day, but your skin will be perfectly prepped for your makeup application.
Increasing the longevity of your makeup
1. A professional is trained to create a look that will last, but touchups won’t hurt!
2. If not already provided, ask your MUA for an on-the-go lippie and powder touchup kit BEFORE the day of. Many are already equipped with powder puffs and mini lippie/gloss tubes for this very reason, but if it’s not mentioned, don’t be afraid to ask.
3. As a backup, bring your own setting powder and lipstick that’s close to the shade you’ll be wearing (you’ll know the shade beforehand since you’ll have had your trial). If you’re extra oily, you don’t want to be without that powder touchup.
I know there are a lot of details here, but trust me, they will save you the headache, and your MUA will love you! Until next time, beauties!
XOXO,
Mia
